Possession: A Romance by A. S. Byatt was published in 1990 and was awarded the Man Booker Prize. The novel centres around the relationship between two fictional Victorian poets which is revealed through the work of two present academics in their race to beat their contemporaries to the truth. As they search through letters and documents and retrace the steps of the poets and their love affair they find themselves in the cobbled streets of Whitby.
