Whitby Shipping Movements & Information

Using the power of the maritime AIS system, we've been able to display the following live display of shipping movements in the sea off Whitby and the nearby coast.

All vessels with a registered tonnage exceeding 300 must by law now carry a working AIS transponder which provides any listening station with their name, digital selective calling ID number (effectively their telephone number), their position, heading and speed, and their current activity. A fantastic innovation, useful to both large commercial ships, and small pleasure boats who can, without radar, know if they are on a collision course with a large vessel - even in thick fog.
