Hope and Homes for Children was established in 1994 by the then Commander of the British United Nations contingent in the Balkans, Colonel Mark Cook as a direct result of him witnessing the devastating impact of war on the lives of children. Hope and Homes for Children works in twelve countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Africa. In Central and Eastern Europe, where the work has become internationally recognised as a model of good practice, the focus is on closing institutions and moving children into family-based care. In Africa the Charity provides a vital lifeline for orphans and for families at risk of breakdown due to the pressures of poverty, disease and conflict.
