Whitby marathon

Got something to say about Whitby that doesn't really fit in the other categories? Then say it in here.

Whitby marathon

Post by jgharston » Sun Apr 13, 2014 1:23 pm

Watching the news of the London marathon this afternoon it occurs to me that Whitby to Scarborough is about 20 miles, and with a few detours you could get a 26.2 mile marathon course between the two towns. A quick shufty with Google Maps gets a route from the Abbey via Larpool, Ruswarp, Stainsacre, Hawsker, Fylingthorpe, Boggle Hole, Ravenscar, Cloughton, Scalby, Peasholm Park. :)

There used to be a Scarborough Marathon. I did run once and Jimmy Saville was competing.

Whitby has never had a Marathon but it did have a half marathon run by the Round Table or Whitby Lions. I competed in that for several seasons.

Perhaps one of the problems for a Scarborough to Whitby one, might just be the traffic on the main road.

The route I worked out only crosses the A171 at Larpool Lane, Hawsker, Cloughton and Scalby, the rest goes along side roads, a bit of the B1447 to RHB, and a bit of the old railway line.

But wouldn't that still mean closing the road at those points for the duration of time it took all runners to complete the course?

It's an excellent idea! Would be a little awkward to have to close the road though. But what about the cinder track? It'd make it too short by some way perhaps, but add a lap of the two town centres for good measure and hey presto?

The Sheffield Marathon runs almost entirely on main roads - though it's hard to tell as the idiots published the route map upside down.

Anyone know when the next marathon in Whitby will be?

if you read the posts you'll see there isn't a marathon in Whitby nor has their been one. There used to be a half marathon run by the Lions but that finished years ago.
