Only Scarborough Borough Council ....

Post by MarionHaste » Sun Apr 15, 2007 9:47 pm

... could have pulled down a fine, art deco building and replaced it with a shiplap shed which will last two winters if it's lucky.

Have you seen the new lavvy block/lifeguard station near the beach huts? If not, you're in for a shock.

It looks like it's straight out of Redcar. Part of the fine facade of the old North Bay Cafe is still there - but reduced to a wall in front of the new, giant blue 'shed'.

Sheer vandalism. It just takes your breath away.

No, my council is terrible too.
Our bus station was knocked down two or three years ago and there are still no plans for a new one to be built (it was also closed for several months before it was knocked down.) In the same amount of time, Hull's train station has been done up, they've been given a new bus station and a new shopping centre attatched to it. All us Derby folk have had is the monstrosity that is Westfield, Derby!! x

Oh dear.

No, I haven't seen it yet.

Sadly, Gwynedd Council have also done Bad Things - the lovely late Victorian police station being pulled down and replaced with a carbon copy M+S a few years back, for example.

I wish councils in general would appreciate local history and heritage that little bit more.

Oh, a whole controversy has blown up about it now in the Gazette. Something about an unusable sun deck (with a fence around it just high enough to prevent users from seeing the sea. Doh) and stairs that will have to be ripped out due to being unsafe.

The total cost of this appalling blot on the landscape? Some £440,000, if memory serves. They should have gone to B&Q.
