Whitby kippers ...

Post by MarionHaste » Sun Jan 14, 2007 11:26 am

.. were in The guardian on Saturday - but 'Fortunes's' was not mentioned specifically. Where else are kippers smoked in Whitby?

There are only three traditional smokehouses left in the UK AFAIK - Whitby, Arbroath and one other...which might have closed...

If it's properly smoked, chances are it'll be from Fortunes if it's in the Whitby area.

Deffo not Fortunes. I've had both regularly and they're very different from each other.

Very true. You can tell with the bacon too - bacon smoked at Fortune's - as sold by the butcher in Baxtergate - has a much more smoky flavour than any other cured locally.

The Whitby Catch get their kippers from Nobles - along with Fortunes, one of the two firms specialising in smoking, who also used to be based on Henrietta Street where Nobles Cottages now are.

Fortunes also used to hang salmon up in their smokehouse, and it was worth killing for. But they haven't had any for the last few months, so probably they are not doing it any more. Pity if so.
