An old family story atates that we are descended Spanish sailors Can anyone help please? i.e. why, when and how they got to Whitby - shipwreck, deserters. any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know the ins and outs of this case, but such beliefs are very common in these islands.

In Irish and Scottish coastal areas, people often claim to be descended from Spanish seamen wrecked during the Armada. But accounts at the time of the Armada would suggest that the Scots killed the survivors in Scotland, the English killed the survivors in the south west of Ireland, and Fitzwilliam killed most of the survivors in Ulster. Those who survived were usually noblemen who were taken to London and sold for ransom.

Who knows where we all come from? Personally, I think I am probably Mexican.
