The Rohilla disaster

Post by helenj1967 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 12:26 pm

I am researching my family history and wonder if anyone would be able to tell me if the names are known of the men who were responsible for the horses which pulled the lifeboat - particulalry in the rescue attempt of the Rohilla?

i would be most grateful
Helen

My great great grandad was one of the men who helped pull the lifeboat over land.
He was known locally as awd tut.

Kishy, it was my Great Grandad and possibly one of his sons - but only in family legend and things have got a blurred, do you know any other details? was it just 'concerned citizens', were a certain group of people responsible?

I am afraid I don't know if my Great Grandad had a nickname - he was just George Simpson!

I think it was just a thing which is now shamfully a thing of the past were everyone helped one another.
I asked my nan about it and she told me that awd tut(thomas dryden) was there and had helped.

Thanks, I thought it was probably something like that, we aren't even sure my Great grandad was there, I think it is one of those things that everyone wanted a little of the glory and stories just grow don't they!! Unfortunately there is no-one of that generation left to ask or the next generation down.

Helen - a Whitby chap called Colin Brittain has written a really good book on the Rohilla.
I reckon he would be able to help you out.
His email address is: info@eskside.co.uk
