wedding on the beach

Got something to say about Whitby that doesn't really fit in the other categories? Then say it in here.

wedding on the beach

Post by lew306red » Thu Aug 07, 2014 9:08 pm

Hi Everyone.
I've been a regular visitor to Whitby over the years, and my partner also has great memories of Whitby.
So we decided to get married in Whitby, we wanted to have our wedding at St Marys, but as we don't live in the parish we cannot :-(.

So we would like to marry on the beach then get blessed at St Marys.
We have heard there is a beach in the town which is registered for ceremonies.
Can anyone help

Unsure if there's a 'certified' beach or not but you could consider a non formal ceremony on the beach followed by official registration at the church - or visa versa.

My wife and I signed the paperwork in the York register office the day before our own marriage - without ceremony. We then had a full ceremony with all the bells and whistles in a private location, outdoors. We hired a Humanist Celebrant (Michelle Burns) for the task. She was excellent. Here's a link:

You could sign the paperwork in the Whitby register office also, if the church isn't available for that part either.

We found that although it wasn't 'official', the day with friends and family witnessing vows etc etc felt very very much like our wedding day, as opposed to the day before in York.

Thanks for the advice. We are up again next week so will see the registrars then to discuss our options.

As you may know the registry office in Whitby is up at the edge of the recreational area on West Cliff next to St Hildas church.

I'm not sure I'd want to get married on a crowded beach in summer. And in winter? you'll freeze to death.
