Open plan houses

I've been idly browsing through online property adverts for houses and flats in Whitby. Why do so many people completely destroy their property by ripping all the internal walls out? I've even viewed a couple where I shook my head in disappointment as soon as I walked through the door. Who on earth ...

Re: Railway Station refurbishment

About two weeks ago Network Rail finished putting the second track back in at the station, so through trains from the NYMR can come all the way through without conflicting with Esk Valley services. The first steam train came in to the newly rebuilt Platform 2 about a week ago: Whitby Gazette video

Old Electoral Registers

Does anybody know who holds old Whitby electoral registers/rolls? I'm specifically looking for the 1950s, so that would be the Scarborough & Whitby County Constituency. I know the British Library have copies, but London's a bit too far to go, I was hoping there would be somewhere closer. I've trawle...

Re: Whitby marathon

The Sheffield Marathon runs almost entirely on main roads - though it's hard to tell as the idiots published the route map upside down.

The route I worked out only crosses the A171 at Larpool Lane, Hawsker, Cloughton and Scalby, the rest goes along side roads, a bit of the B1447 to RHB, and a bit of the old railway line.

Re: Business at whitby

To operate on the beach you'd need a licence from Scarborough Borough Council - not sure which department. You need a Street Trading licence to "sell, expose or offer for sale any article (including a living thing) in a street, road, lay by, footway, beach or other area, road, lay by, footway or fo...

Whitby marathon

Watching the news of the London marathon this afternoon it occurs to me that Whitby to Scarborough is about 20 miles, and with a few detours you could get a 26.2 mile marathon course between the two towns. A quick shufty with Google Maps gets a route from the Abbey via Larpool, Ruswarp, Stainsacre, ...

Re: Disabled access

I'm a cyclist and I do the same thing trying to find routes that avoid going up hills. The big problem is that there's no real access between the West Cliff area and the rest of town. You have to slog up Waterstead Lane, Downdinner Hill, Chubb Hill, Brunswick Street or Kyber Pass. I tend to cycle to...

Re: MOVING TO WHITBY ! !

When I was in my teens and twenties, come the end of school holidays, Whitby was dead. No visitors. The only people you saw were locals for the rest of the winter. There were only a couple of ancient and simple cafes and only a couple of restaurants. I'm a couple of decades younger than you, but I ...

I quite like the Railway Chippy - a nice local chip shop, not a tourist place.

Helredale

Does anybody know the source of the name Helredale? It seems to have appeared from nowhere in 1894 for the new Parish at the east of Whitby annexed from Hawsker when the Urban District Council was formed and District Councils had to be formed from a whole number of parishes. I can't find any referen...
