I can't believe it's over five years since I started this thread - and thanks to everyone that has so far posted. I must say that I've come increasingly more sceptical of this subject over the years - though I'm pleased to see my original post was of open minded interest rather than one of 'belief'....

It's possible to impregnate bone with plastics to make them weather proof.

You can buy antler treated as such to stabilise it for making 'field knife' handles.

Perhaps the new whale bones were treated as such and the rumour spread from there?

Many of the fishing boats shown have Scottish registration letters...LH = Leith, FR =Fraserburgh, CY=Castlebay, but where was the KW mark from? I can't find it listed in my book of marks.
