I am a newby and am trying desperately to relive my youth.
In about 1962 I visited Whitby on a school trip from my home in Kent. I have just returned from Whitby having visited for a day on business and tried desperately to source the area I stayed in all those years ago. No Joy.
From memory (I was only 14-15 years old and it was a long time ago) we stayed, in what I thought to be an old army camp or maybe it was a hostel/youth centre. I think it was located on the top of a hill overlooking Whitby. I am sure it was very near a disused railway Station as my friends and I used to creep off there when the teachers were not looking.
I also seem to remember that we walked from the centre into the town down a steep hill with the harbour to my left. Yet I could find no trace of where I might have stayed as a child. Sadly I do not remember the castle/Abbey ruins which is situated on the top of the hill where I thought I had stayed.
The other problem I have is that I had travelled there and back by train. However, If the railway was in operation from London to Whitby How was I staying next to a 'disused' over grown station? Clearly all this was before our Mr Beeching dropped his axe!!
I would be very grateful if anyone out there could supply any information as I would very much like to recall the location. I am visiting Whitby again in October due to business and it would be great to find old haunts or where I might have stayed. It is probably all built on now and obviously the station building would be long gone. But any information would be appreciated. Assuming of course that there are people out there over 50 with very good memories.
